Beyond The Line

Comparing today with the 1900’s do you believe there is an American dream? What is it? And is it true?

A real definition does not exist the American dream probably has a different meaning to every US citizen. For some it is the dream of freedom and equality, for others it is the dream of a fulfilled life or even the dream of fame and wealth. In general, the American dream can be defined as being the opportunity and freedom for all citizens to achieve their goals and become rich and famous if only they work hard enough. I believe the American dream is very much accomplishable and it’s easy to achieve it today rather than the 1900’s.

Today our society is very different than the 1900’s. We have better transportation, more money, and more jobs. In the 1900’s they had to travel on horses, their dollar amount was worth less than it is now and their jobs were on ranches.

To achieve the American dream today all you have to basically have is knowledge and a goal. In the 1900’s they didn’t have basic knowledge and they had many goals that seem impossible to achieve.

In conclusion today and the 1900’s aren’t similar in any way.

What type of women does Curly Wife represent?
Women are very special in everyone’s life. Their mothers, sisters, daughter, and wife’s. Each woman is different in their own way. While reading the book “Of Mice and Men” I discovered the type of women Curly wife is. Curly’s wife represents a lonely and desperate woman, but she also is a women yearning for love.
Being the only women in a male dominant ranch is very hard. Men lust for women and Curlys wife obviously loves the attention. In many attempts it seems she lust for Lennie. Her husband always looks for her and he suspects her of sleeping with slim. Now the men talk about her and say she’s a “Loose” woman. I believe this is a desperate attempt and Curley doesn’t give her the attention with his jealous ways.
In The last chapter of the book Curlys wife admits that she has been hurt many times in the past and she actually doesn’t love Curley. This actually changed my view of her because all I can see is someone yearning for love that they never received.
In conclusion I think curlys wife is a very good woman that represents a lonely and desperate woman, but she also is a women yearning for love. Too bad she died.

Would you rather have lennie as a friend or George?
Lennie and George are both very important characters in the book “Of Mice and Men” Lennie is a forgetful sensitive man, while George is a stern, angry type of man. If I had to choose between both friends I would chose both men for two very different reasons.
I would be friends with Lennie because I think I could be like a mentor to him by helping him with his memory and being a hood mentor to him. He could also help me with work because I’m not that strong.
I could be friends with George because I could help him with life and help him realize the difficulties aren’t worth it. I could also argue with him back and forth because we both would have similar characacterecs with each other.
Even though it’s only the first chapter I believe I can relate to these characters in more ways than one.

Between the line: Motif

4. Why is Lennie often compared to animals?
I think Lennie is often compared to animals because of the way he acts. He acts like a big kid but is in a grown man body so he’s compared to animals because many animals are big but dumb.

Between the line: Conflict

3. What is one man vs. man conflict tin this book? What makes this a man vs. man conflict?
A man vs. man conflict in this book was when Lennie and Curly fought because they were attacking each other and at the same time trying to prove to the other man not to mess with them.

Between the line: Setting

2. Would this story be better if it had a different setting?
No because everything that takes place in this story relates to this certain time period so changing the setting could possibly mess up the story.

Between the line: Characters

1. How are George and Lennie similar to Huck and Jim?
George and Lennie is similar to Huck and Jim in two ways. One way is that they both rely on each other and the other way is that they seem to be hiding and trying to maintain in society.
