Summer Of My Life

Double Dutch, jump rope, and hopscotch too. Pigtails, secret crush I couldn’t get enough. This was the spring of my life. The whole season has changed and it’s a new one coming through. Moving out with the old, while replacing it with the new. Get prepared. It will get hot and sweaty. But this is where I’m at in my life, and I been ready. I grew up and changed a lot of the things that I used to do. I have responsibilities. I can’t run and play like I used to. Don’t be concerned I still have fun. I like to be playful and go out on the run. A sign of summertime is that I’m focused and level headed, keep my grades straight and I plan ahead. The decisions I make in life show I’m mature. .

Responsibilities are what make me feel mature. When I was young I was so carefree, but as I grew older I recognized the responsibilities placed upon me. When my parents are at work I have to cook, clean, and take out the trash. There’s been many of times I didn’t want to but, that’s the point of growing up, and I learned life doesn’t go my way. I find myself different than others because my responsibilities are not chores. it’s what I want, and what I’m supposed to do. These responsibilities help me as I age, I’d rather learn young than never learn at all.

However I’m not always serious. I love playing and reading with my little sister. I can recall a time when I was extremely tired and my little sister ran up to me and asked, “Can we play dress-up?” I know that she looks up to me, and telling her no would hurt her feelings, so I decided to play and put a smile on my face. As I grow I see that I’m not in this world alone. I have siblings that look up to me so being in the mature state and being an idol to them matters the most to me.

I achieved maturity by being focused and level headed. I keep my grades at a acceptable level. It’s not hard to stay focused and level headed. Just last week I took a visit to the college room at my school, just to see what I will need for the future ahead of me. I realized that life is what one makes it and I want to live mine with success not regret.

People make decisions everyday. It’s the decisions people make that shows how mature that person really is. I believe my decisions in life affect how I am, and why I believe I’m at a mature state in my life. I gave up boatloads of friends, and decided not to do certain things because I knew the consequences of what would happen if I did. I can recall a time when a friend of mine wanted me to steal things from a store with her. I said no because I knew that if I took the action of stealing I would have to pay the repercussions of my actions. So I decided to say no to her, and let that “friend” out my life. I compare my actions and decisions to Lizabeth from the story “Marigolds” by Eugenia Collier. The story is about a girl who’s stuck between childhood and womanhood. The beginning of the story she finds herself playing around in Ms. Lottie’s marigolds. She teases her until Ms. Lottie complains and they run away. The climax of the story is when Lizabeth discovers he father crying. To see her father in a depressive state changes her sentiment. She goes through all these feelings and that’s when she transfers into womanhood. She tells her brother she’s running away and as she leaves as he tries to stop her and bring her back to childhood. The story ended by Lizabeth pulling the marigolds out the garden and her and Ms. Lottie having a stare down. Just like Lizabeth, I made my decision to step out of spring and sunshine into the summer.

Maturity is not determined by ones age; it’s determined by ones actions and attitude. Maturity brought with it several gifts. I learned many things about others and myself. Responsibilities will bring you independence and help one as they grow. Love from siblings can bring you joy you never dreamed of. Stay focused and make good decisions, they’ll help you process life. Processing a transition from season to the next is a hard thing to do. Accepting the change, and living with it would be the best thing to do.

Service Learning Reflection

Service Learning was fun yesterday we accomplished a lot of things. We started a new fundraiser Pennies For Patients. We made the boxes and we put each of them in each of the classes. My personal job in the group is creating the website for child safety. Were inching towards working on smoking and carbon monixide. We also gave Kaleema a Citizen Ship award and we recieved our Community Service Badges.

"High on the Hog"

Do you ever feel like you deserve more than enough? Feel tired of settling for less when you worked so hard for the best? If so by reading Julia Fields poem “High on the Hog” will give you an even better reason to want what you deserve. When reading this poem I discovered many of reasons why this poem caught my interest. I found that this poem reflects on history to make her point as to why she deserves “High on the Hog” She also uses strong vocabulary when creating this poem. Julia’s voice and emotion was one of the strongest things that caught my attention.
The first reason I like “ High on the Hog” is because it’s very historical. In this poem she talks about slavery, and what struggles African Americans went through and why she deserves to be “High on the Hog”. When she says,” For I’ve been faithful fool, from 40 acres and a mule” and says, “ Oh, I heard the Mau Mau screaming”. Just from these words said I can tell she’s reflecting on history’s tough times.
Another reason I favor “High on the Hog” was because Fields uses good vocabulary when writing this poem. When reading this poem I became instantly sidetracked by hr use of the words “shrimp soufflé” and “aperitifs”. These words were challenging and they made me say “Hey I may need a dictionary to read the rest” This poem has wonderful usage of vocaburaly.
My favorite reason I like this poem is o how Julia Fields voices her emotions. She sounds so angry in this poem. I believe the message is why settle for less? She overcame so much that she was tired of the same thing, she want what she deserves and this proves that when she says “And I want High on the Hog” She uses so much force that it made me say the same.
Now that you observed what Julia Fields is feeling in her poem and why she deserves to be “High on the Hog”. Now that you witnessed a powerful usage of vocabulary, a step back into history, and the best emotion a poet can use. You can now stop settling for less and get what you deserve because you deserve “High on the Hog”
